Modelled is the original instrument by Hans Frei in Warwick County Museum. The original instrument, which was later converted to an 11 course lute, was probably made around the middle of the 16thcentury. It is unquestionably one of the finest surviving lutes of the period. Built on the ‘pearl’ form, for which Bologna lutes were renowned, the shape of the form is of particular subtlety and elegance. As on the original, I prefer to use highly figured maple for ribs, without filets, and a neck and pegbox of plum or beech.
