Although many surviving chitarroni have multi rib backs, some like this one by Koch have a more modest number - in this case fifteen.

The preponderance of multi rib backs is partly due to uneven survival rates which tend to favour decorative objects, but is also because the very flatted cross sections of a chitarrone back are quite difficult to form with wide ribs. This instrument by Koch is unusual in combining a flattened back and relatively wide ribs in an elegant and convincing manner. The instrument has a simple triple rose, though a large single rose is also possible.
