The wide bodied outline of this design is based on a lute depicted in an early 16th century Venetian Altarpiece.

I originally introduced this six course model in 1980. It is based on an outline found in Marziale'sCremona Altarpieceof 1507 (National Gallery, London); the cross sections of the back and the deep capping strip, are taken from the Warwick Frei.

I prefer to build the eleven rib back from figured maple or ash without any filets, with a neck and pegbox made from plum, Swiss pear, or maple.
