Based on some early 16th century Venetian painting.

The design for this instrument is derived from early 16th century Venetian paintings which depict outlines that are quite rounded in the shoulders - in fact the sort of shape that we normally associate with much later instruments. We can only guess at the character of the cross sections, so I have based these on early instruments by Magno Tiefenbrucker with nine broad ribs. The neck and pegbox can be made from solid maple, beech or plum. Like almost all six course lutes the pegs are heart shaped.
